When Beyoncé broke the internet earlier this month with the release of her epic Black is King film, the celebrity cameos featured with the project were among the most discussed aspects. Whether they were iconic '90s supermodels (Naomi Campbell), Oscar-winning actresses (Lupita Nyong'o), or members of the Knowles family (Blue Ivy Carter), each star's presence felt necessary. Among the A-list names like Nyong'o and Campbell, Beyoncé introduced the world to one of fashion's most exciting new talents: South Sudanese model Aweng Ade-Chuol. Runway obsessives may remember Ade-Chuol for her appearance in Rihanna's Fenty x Savage debut collection back in 2018 or her spot in Kerby Jean-Raymond's Weeksville-inspired spring 2019 show.

The secrecy surrounding Black is King meant that Ade-Chuol couldn't tell her loved ones about the project. Still, she didn't find it challenging to keep the secret. "I would love to work with B again; she's phenomenal," she says. "So I never said anything! Not to my mother, not even to my wife." Although working with Beyoncé would be a career high for anybody, Ade-Chuol's ambitions extend far beyond and aren't confined to one industry. As a model, actress, student, and artist Ade-Chuol wears many hats, but the 21 year old wouldn't have it any other way. Drawn to performance as a child she's spent years studying acting and her interest in the law drove her to pursue the degree she's currently working towards. "I think during quarantine and staying at home, I've been revisiting exactly what I've always wanted to do," she shared on the phone from Brooklyn. "I remembered my original dreams."

Born in Kenya's Kakuma refugee camp, Ade-Chuol and her family were among the millions who fled the second Sudanese civil war. When she moved to Australia at the age of seven, she was determined from the start, excelling at school and plotting out a future as a lawyer. Unlike many of today's models who were discovered via social media or online contests, she was scouted the old fashioned way. Back in 2017, she was working in a Sydney McDonald's to save money for college, when an agent from Chadwick's Models approached her. Though their offer of a trip to Europe was tempting, Ade-Chuol's initial reaction was skepticism. "[They] came up to me and said, 'I think you should model, you have the face for it,' but I had four jobs. I didn't even have the time to entertain the conversation," she says. After some reflection, she decided to give the opportunity a shot, signing with the agency and gearing up for show season. Not long after that, Demna Gvasalia and casting director Dora Diamant came calling. "I ended up doing Vetements in Paris, and that's when I realized what this could be," says Ade-Chuol of the worldwide exclusive she booked during the fall 2018 season. "Modeling became something I could use to get into all the things that I've always wanted to do—I ended up enjoying [the experience] so much."
