Even though there wasn't a store in Bristol back in the day, they opened what can only be described as a colossal mega store, a number of years ago. It is a 4 storey building which used to be a House of Fraser just so you can picture its gigantic size. As it is so big, a lot of people come to Bristol just to go to that Primark and that is one of the reason I hate it. In general the store is just too overwhelming! There are too many people, too many things to look at and it is always a complete mess. I don't know what it is about cheap stores like Primark but I have no idea why people think it is OK to leave things untidy, you wouldn't do that in any other store so why does it become OK when it is cheap? Tiny rant over but to sumamrise my thoughts I am not a massive fan of going in Primark. This doesn't mean that I don't go in, I am just picky about the time that I make my trips to Primark. If I know I am looking to go to Primark, I make sure I am there as soon as it opens on a Saturday morning, that way it is quiet and most importantly tidy.
The hype around Primark has definitely died down since I first discovered Primark but the hauls live on. As there is no online shop, a haul video is the only way you can find out what is currently available. The only problem with watching hauls is that when you do see something you like it isn't necessarily stocked in your local store. Not only that but they have such a high turn over of stock, they basically get new styles everyday so items move quickly. Plus it is very dependent on how quickly the person posts their haul online. If it is a couple of weeks after they have been shopping then the items could have already left the store.
I never really expect to find much in Primark. I never spend more than £20 usually and the max time I spent in the store has to be 20 minutes. I regularly buy my socks and work shoes from Primark but other than that I rarely buy clothes in there. However on my latest visit, I spent more than I have spent in Primark for about 5 years, I spent a whole £31. I know, pushing the boat out. Usually I only pick up some basics so my bills tends to be quite small. It is rare for me to buy clothes in Primark as I prefer quality over quantity but on this particular day I must have been feeling Primark.
For £31 I managed to get 4 items. I got: 1 jumper, 1 top, 1 skirt and a pair of joggers. All of it is very casual and I won't be leaving the house in most of it. I am quite a messy person and I like to have lots of comfy clothes so I tend to buy cheaper comfies so I don't feel annoyed when I ruin them. The top and skirt I would actually wear out and they actually combine to make an outfit.
I'll start with my most worn item which is the jogging bottoms. There is nothing better than getting home from work, taking off my uniform and getting into my comfies. I'm sure you can all relate to this struggle. I usually buy the legging style jammie bottoms from Primark which I wear casually around the house but Primark haven't had any I have liked recently. Instead these jogging bottoms took my fancy. They are baggy, comfy and super soft. I am not usually a fan of joggers, I usually just go for jammies but I have been wearing these a lot since I bought them. They aren't the best quality but for £8, can you really argue? Plus hardly anyone is going to see them. These are lounge joggers so I will never leave my house wearing them.
Another lounge item I bought which once again I will not be wearing outside of the house is a sweatshirt. Well actually I did wear it the other day to pop out for some coffee. I wouldn't normally buy slogan sweatshirts like this but I had to buy it just because it says 'You OK Hun?' on the front. Hun isn't a word that I say very often, I don't really like casual terms of endearment that people use for everyone like: babe, love, hun or anything else that someone calls you when they don't really know you. The worst is when someone calls me darling, I hate that! Anyway for some unknown reason when I drive, I become the ultimate chav. I say things that I wouldn't dream of saying in my everyday life. I swear a lot but I also say 'you OK hun?' when idiots are being idiots on the road, which is most of the time. When I saw this jumper, it just seemed perfect for me. I have to say I would have preferred it if it wasn't white as this is going to get dirty very quickly, probably from my foundation. I am not the best at taking care of my comfy clothes so I don't think this will last long. Once again this jumper was £8 so it doesn't really matter if it doesn't last that long. I wouldn't wear this out of the house unless I was just getting in the car and giving someone a lift. If people saw me wearing it, I couldn't give the whole back story to the jumper so people would just assume that I loved the saying which isn't the case. I knew I would get a lot of wear out of this at home and I have already worn it a lot.
I actually don't mind buying my comfy clothes from Primark, no one really sees them but I don't tend to buy many normal clothes. However whilst I was there I bought a outfit that I would potentially wear out. The first component of the outfit was a top. Even though I have a very strict colour scheme to my wardrobe: black, navy, white and grey, I don't really wear that many black tops. I usually stick to something slightly lighter. However I have really been loving a basic black top recently. Early last month, I wrote a blog post about my love of the Basic White T-Shirt. The only condition is that it had to have some cute embroidery on it. I now have a lot of this style but I've never had a black top before. I loved that this top from Primark had a little pair of lashes on it, I think it is super cute and the top was only £5. I thought it would be a cheap way of incorporating a black top into my wardrobe and even if I don't wear it out, it could become a jammie top. Not only did I like it because it is cute but it also reminded me of a jumper I had seen on Mint Velvet. It was a blush pink jumper with the same detailing but the jumper was £65 so this Primark top was a much cheaper alternative.
A skirt, which can potentially go with this top, is the final item I bought from Primark. I have to say I am not sure about it and it was the most expensive item at £10. I'm not sure about the quality of it. I love the style and I have been looking for a skirt like this for a while but it isn't finished to the standard I like. I'll start with the reasons why I bought this skirt, then move into the negatives. I have been loving this almost school girl vibe skirt for a while but I haven't managed to find one which I really liked and that fit well. This is basically a mini skirt with a flap detail over the front so you are completely covered. I managed to get a size 4 and it fits just snug. It is possibly a bit tight around my waist but that means it gives me a bit of shape. I like the length though. It is definitely mini but it is long enough that everything is covered. I do have to give kudos to Primark for starting to make clothes in a 4, I used to struggle with sizing in Primark but now it isn't too bad. The thing that first drew me to this skirt was the print, it is that classic check print but it has a line of red running through it to make it slightly more unusual.
On to the negatives, my real problem is the lack of care which has gone into composing the garment. I know that I am possibly asking too much considering I was in Primark and the reason it is cheap is because it is made cheaply. I think the front of the skirt looks good but I do wish the knot was tided together rather than being glued together. My main problem is the back of the skirt. There are two darts at the back of the skirt which helps to create shape but they don't look very well stitched so I can imagine them popping open. My main problem with check patterns is when they don't line up properly. I know it is difficult and time consuming but it makes it look better. I wouldn't mind it if an attempt had been made and they almost lined up but the front and back pieces of this skirt do not line up at all! For a casual Spring look I will wear this skirt but I can't see it finding longevity within my wardrobe. At £10 that isn't what Primark clothes are designed for, they are trend pieces designed to last for a few wears before being thrown away. For this very reason, I never really buy from Primark.
I have always preferred quality over quantity; whether that is in my wardrobe or my make up collection however sometimes you just get the urge to buy something cheap for the very reason that it doesn't last long. If there is a trend that you want to try, buying a cheaper alternative can be an affordable way of giving it a go before committing yourself. Primark tends to stay on trend, there are some items which my Nan would wear but most styles are catered for by Primark. I have to say you can not go into Primark expecting quality good as that isn't what you are going to get but for the price, can you really go wrong? I think it is important not to get sucked in by the cheap prices and just buy everything you see. Like when you are in any store, you should evaluate whether you need it and if it fits into your wardrobe, regardless of the price.
